Anki: spaced repetition learning with flashcards

• Anki is an open source app that supports spaced repetition learning via flashcards.
• For “Exploring JavaScript”, there are two Anki decks:
  • exploring-js-cards-topics quizzes various topics covered in the book.
  • exploring-js-cards-api has flashcards with standard library functionality. Use this deck to learn what the various Array methods do, etc.

Importing an Anki deck

Before you can import an Anki deck, you must create an empty deck:

• Name of the new deck: The filename excluding the extensions, excluding a date (if there is one).
  • Filename: exploring-js-cards-topics-YYYY-MM-DD.anki.txt
    • Name of Deck: exploring-js-cards-topics
  • Filename: exploring-js-cards-topics-preview.anki.txt
    • Name of Deck: exploring-js-cards-topics-preview

After that, you can import as often as you want. Anki automatically replaces old cards with new ones.

How to use the cards

• The cards provide comprehensive answers to the questions. You can use them to refresh your memory. If this were a test, you would not reply with what’s on the cards, you’d give shorter answers.

• To increase the learning effect, you can write down an answer before looking it up on the card.

Filtering by tags

• Each card is tagged with its chapter (arrays, operators, etc.).
• Anki lets you filter decks by tag.

Changing the alignment of the text

• In the desktop app, go to “Browse > Sidebar: Note Types > Basic > Button: Cards… > Radio Button: Styling”:

  text-align: center;
